1. Introduction: Core Significance of Fastener Selection for Industrial Projects

As the core basic connecting components in machinery, construction, automotive, new energy, pressure vessel and other industrial fields, fasteners are known as the "structural skeleton" of industrial manufacturing. Small bolts, nuts, washers and studs directly determine the connection stability, service life, safety factor and operation and maintenance cost of the complete equipment. According to global industrial manufacturing statistics, more than 30% of equipment connection failures are caused by improper fastener selection, mismatched standards, inconsistent material working conditions and incorrect surface protection solutions.

In foreign trade procurement and industrial supporting scenarios, overseas buyers focus on four core indicators: standard compliance, working condition adaptability, long-term stability and corrosion resistance. Most procurement disputes and project rework stem from inaccurate selection rather than product quality defects. Combining mainstream international standards including ISO, DIN, ASTM, ANSI, GB and EN, this article comprehensively analyzes fastener selection logic, material matching rules, working condition adaptation schemes and common fault solutions, providing professional references for overseas engineering procurement, bulk stock preparation and customized non-standard production.

2. Analysis of Mainstream International Fastener Standard Systems

Global fastener industry has diverse standard systems. Equipment from different countries and industries has mandatory standard adaptation requirements. The primary selection principle is complete consistency between equipment standards and fastener standards. Mixed use of different standards will easily cause thread mismatch, insufficient load capacity and assembly failure. At present, six mainstream standard systems cover more than 95% of overseas procurement demands.

2.1 GB Standard (Chinese National Standard)

GB standards are widely applicable in domestic industries and emerging markets such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa. It covers full-range bolts, nuts, washers, studs and non-standard fasteners with complete specifications and high universality. With obvious cost advantages in bulk procurement, GB fasteners are widely used in general machinery, construction engineering and ordinary electromechanical equipment.

2.2 DIN Standard (German Industrial Standard)

DIN standards are the core mainstream standards for European markets and the most recognized precision fastener standards worldwide. Common products include DIN933 full-thread hex bolts, DIN931 half-thread hex bolts, DIN934 hex nuts, DIN985 nylon lock nuts, DIN125 flat washers and DIN127 spring washers. Featuring precise tolerance and stable mechanical properties, DIN fasteners are widely used in precision machinery, automation equipment, construction machinery and European engineering projects.

2.3 ASTM Standard (American Material Standard)

ASTM standards focus on high-strength heavy-duty working conditions and are mandatory for North American markets. Core high-strength models include ASTM A325/A490 structural bolts, ASTM A193 B7 high-temperature and high-pressure studs and ASTM A307 carbon steel bolts, matched with ASTM A563 and A194 2H/2HM heavy hex nuts and ASTM F436 hardened washers. They are widely applied in steel structures, petrochemical industry, pressure vessels and heavy machinery.

2.4 ISO/ANSI/EN International General Standards

ISO is the most universal global basic standard; ANSI adapts to North American civil and industrial equipment; EN standards comply with EU industrial safety specifications, focusing on environmental protection, anti-corrosion and safety certification, which are mostly used in new energy equipment, EU-exported electromechanical products and high-end complete equipment.

3. Three Core Dimensions of Fastener Selection: Material, Grade and Surface Treatment

On the basis of standard matching, material mechanical grade and surface treatment technology determine the bearing capacity, temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and service life of fasteners, which are the core basis for accurate selection according to actual working conditions.

3.1 Material Selection Rules

Carbon steel (Grade 4.8/8.8/10.9/12.9): Cost-effective with complete strength grades, suitable for conventional indoor machinery and construction equipment. Grade 8.8 and above are medium and high-strength carbon steel fasteners for medium and heavy dynamic load working conditions; Grade 10.9/12.9 high-strength bolts are exclusive for steel structures, heavy equipment and high-pressure working conditions.

Stainless steel (304/316): Excellent rust-proof, acid and alkali resistance, suitable for outdoor open-air, humid marine and chemical corrosive environments, widely used in new energy equipment, outdoor steel structures, marine engineering and food machinery.

3.2 Mechanical Grade Matching Principle

Universal industry rule: The nut grade must be equal to or higher than the bolt grade to avoid connection failure caused by high-strength bolts matched with low-strength nuts. For example, Grade 10.9 high-strength bolts must be matched with Grade 10 or higher heavy nuts; ASTM A193 B7 studs must be equipped with A194 2H/2HM supporting nuts to ensure mechanical balance of the overall connection structure.

3.3 Surface Treatment Adaptation for Working Conditions

Black oxide treatment: Suitable for indoor dry conventional industrial equipment with no anti-corrosion requirements, low cost and high universality. Electro-galvanizing: Basic rust prevention for ordinary outdoor dry environments. Hot-dip galvanizing: Thick coating and strong anti-corrosion performance for outdoor steel structures, municipal engineering and open-air equipment. Dacromet/Geomet treatment: No hydrogen embrittlement risk and ultra-high corrosion resistance, suitable for harsh working conditions such as marine and chemical salt spray, which is the mainstream process for high-end export orders.

4. Exclusive Selection Solutions for Different Working Conditions

4.1 Static Conventional Working Conditions (General Machinery, Indoor Equipment)

With stable load, no vibration, no corrosion and normal temperature environment, GB and DIN standard ordinary carbon steel bolts and nuts with Grade 4.8/8.8 and electro-galvanizing or black oxide treatment are preferred, balancing cost performance and stability, suitable for large-scale conventional stock preparation.

4.2 Dynamic Vibration Working Conditions (Construction Machinery, Automobile Assembly)

Long-term equipment vibration easily causes thread loosening and falling off. It is necessary to adopt anti-loosening combination solutions: match DIN985 nylon lock nuts, DIN127 spring washers and tooth-shaped anti-loosening washers, and select high-strength fasteners above Grade 8.8 to avoid thread wear and connection failure caused by long-term vibration.

4.3 High-temperature and High-pressure Working Conditions (Petrochemical, Pressure Vessel)

High-temperature and high-pressure environments require high material heat resistance and tensile strength. ASTM A193 B7 studs and A194 2H/2HM matching nuts must be adopted. This material can adapt to a wide temperature range of -29℃ to 550℃ with stable mechanical properties, complying with international pressure vessel safety standards and eliminating the risk of material softening and fracture at high temperature.

4.4 Outdoor Anti-corrosion Working Conditions (Steel Structure, Marine Engineering)

Outdoor and coastal high salt spray environments are prone to electrochemical corrosion. Ordinary black oxide and thin galvanized products are prohibited. Hot-dip galvanized and Dacromet surface-treated ASTM A325/A490 structural bolts or 316 stainless steel fasteners are preferred to greatly extend equipment service life and reduce operation and maintenance replacement costs.

5. Common Overseas Procurement Selection Mistakes and Solutions

5.1 Assembly Failure Caused by Mixed Standards

Common problem: Mixed use of metric and imperial standards or different system thread specifications leads to thread jamming and assembly failure. Solution: Strictly follow the original equipment standards, purchase bolts, nuts and washers of the same system in complete sets, and provide standard parameter reports before delivery to ensure 100% compatibility.

5.2 Potential Safety Hazards Caused by Mismatched Material Grades

Common problem: Low-grade fasteners are used in heavy-load working conditions, resulting in fracture and deformation under long-term load. Solution: Match corresponding mechanical grades according to equipment load parameters, adopt high-strength matching combinations for heavy-load, high-pressure and vibration scenarios, and provide material inspection reports and mechanical performance test certificates.

5.3 Accelerated Corrosion Caused by Mismatched Surface Process and Working Conditions

Common problem: Ordinary electroplated products are used in outdoor and marine working conditions, resulting in rust and coating peeling in a short time. Solution: Customize surface treatment processes according to service environments, and adopt high-end anti-corrosion processes such as Dacromet and hot-dip galvanizing for harsh working conditions with salt spray test data support.
